Living Wisdom

This powerful message explores the profound truth found in Proverbs: the tongue has the power of life and death. Through the story of the twelve spies sent to explore Canaan in Numbers, we discover how careless words can derail God's promises and destroy faith communities. Ten spies returned with fearful reports that spiraled into lies, gossip, rebellion, and ultimately caused an entire generation to miss entering the Promised Land. Their words revealed hearts filled with doubt rather than trust in God's promise. Yet Joshua and Caleb spoke differently, their words reflecting faith in God's faithfulness. This narrative reveals a critical spiritual principle: our words are windows into our hearts. When we speak words of healing, forgiveness, and encouragement, we participate in God's redemptive work in the world. Jesus came as God's Word made flesh, speaking healing over our deepest wounds and offering forgiveness for the damage our own words have caused. As recipients of this grace, we are called to guard our hearts by guarding our words, speaking life rather than death, building up rather than tearing down. The wisdom literature reminds us that when we learn God's Word and let it dwell richly within us, our speech becomes a fountain of life to those around us.
