Making a list. Checking it twice: Be present
This powerful reflection challenges us to reconsider what truly matters during the Christmas season. Drawing from John's Gospel and the promise in Malachi, we're reminded that the real miracle of Christmas isn't found in our shopping lists or perfect gifts, but in the profound truth of Emmanuel - God with us. The statistics are sobering: 71% of people regret not taking time to enjoy the holidays, caught up in stress and distraction. Yet when Jesus first revealed the kingdom of God, he didn't perform miracles or preach sermons - he simply invited his disciples to come and be present with him. This is the gift we're called to share with one another. We remember the cookies baked with grandma and the family gathered around the tree far longer than we remember last year's presents. Jesus promises that where two or three are gathered in his name, he is present with them. This Christmas, we have the opportunity to create new traditions centered on presence rather than presents - eating together as a family, sharing Advent devotions, or simply saying no to some activities so we can say yes to being truly present with those we love. The miracle of Christmas comes home when we share the gift of our presence with one another.
