The Old Testament reading for today is taken from the first chapter of the book of Lamentations where the prophet Jeremiah describes the pain and sorrow in Jerusalem after the city is destroyed.
Our New Testament reading comes from the first chapter of Paul’s second letter to the church in Corinth where he reminds us of the comfort we have in Christ, a comfort we share with one another.
The Gospel lesson today is found in the nineteenth chapter of John’s account of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus where Jesus speaks to his mother Mary from the cross.
12 “Doesn’t this affect all of you who pass by?
Look and see if there’s any pain
like the pain that the Lord has caused me,
like the pain that he has made me suffer on the day of his fierce anger.
13 He sent fire from above.
He made it go deep into my bones.
He spread a net for my feet.
He made me turn back.
He has left me devastated.
He has made me sick all day long.
14 My rebellious acts are a heavy burden for me.
They were tied together by God’s own hands.
They were tied around my neck.
He has weakened me with them.
The Lord has handed me over to people I cannot oppose.
15 The Lord has treated all the warriors inside my walls with contempt.
He called an army to defeat my young men.
The Lord trampled the people of Judah in a winepress.
16 I’m crying because of all these things.
My eyes—my eyes flow with tears.
No one can give me the comfort I need to keep me alive.
Everyone is too far away from me.
My children are devastated because my enemies have won.”
3 Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! He is the Father who is compassionate and the God who gives comfort. 4 He comforts us whenever we suffer. That is why whenever other people suffer, we are able to comfort them by using the same comfort we have received from God. 5 Because Christ suffered so much for us, we can receive so much comfort from him.
The Gospel lesson today is found in the nineteenth chapter of John’s account of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus where Jesus speaks to his mother Mary from the cross.
25 Jesus’ mother, her sister, Mary (the wife of Clopas), and Mary from Magdala were standing beside Jesus’ cross. 26 Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing there. He said to his mother, “Look, here’s your son!” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Look, here’s your mother!”
From that time on she lived with that disciple in his home.
