Our first reading as we start our Giving Season here at Ascension comes from Psalm 78. The writer of the Psalm reminds us that we tell the next generation about God so they would put their hope in Him.
The New Testament reading comes from the first chapter of Paul’s letter to the young pastor Timothy. Paul reminds Timothy to hold to the faith he learned from his mother and grandmother.
The Gospel Lesson is taken from Luke’s account of the life and teachings of Jesus, the 8th chapter. Jesus reminds us that we have been given a lamp that shouldn’t be hidden.
Open your ears to my teachings, my people.
Turn your ears to the words from my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth to illustrate points.
I will explain what has been hidden long ago,
3 things that we have heard and known about,
things that our parents have told us.
4 We will not hide them from our children.
We will tell the next generation
about the Lord’s power and great deeds
and the miraculous things he has done.
5 He established written instructions for Jacob’s people.
He gave his teachings to Israel.
He commanded our ancestors to make them known to their children
6 so that the next generation would know them.
Children yet to be born would learn them.
They will grow up and tell their children
7 to trust God, to remember what he has done,
and to obey his commands.
The New Testament reading comes from the first chapter of Paul’s letter to the young pastor Timothy. Paul reminds Timothy to hold to the faith he learned from his mother and grandmother.
From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by God’s will—a will that contains Christ Jesus’ promise of life.
2 To Timothy, my dear child.
Good will, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord!
3 I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day when I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience as my ancestors did. 4 I remember your tears and want to see you so that I can be filled with happiness. 5 I’m reminded of how sincere your faith is. That faith first lived in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice. I’m convinced that it also lives in you.
6 You received a gift from God when I placed my hands on you to ordain you. Now I’m reminding you to fan that gift into flames.
The Gospel Lesson is taken from Luke’s account of the life and teachings of Jesus, the 8th chapter. Jesus reminds us that we have been given a lamp that shouldn’t be hidden.
16 (Jesus said) “No one lights a lamp and hides it under a bowl or puts it under a bed. Instead, everyone who lights a lamp puts it on a lamp stand so that those who come in will see the light. 17 There is nothing hidden that will not be revealed. There is nothing kept secret that will not come to light.
18 “So pay attention to how you listen! Those who understand these mysteries will be given more knowledge. However, some people don’t understand these mysteries. Even what they think they understand will be taken away from them.”
