Day 4

Day 4: The Multiplication of Sin Through Words
Reading: Numbers 14:1-4; Proverbs 10:19

Devotional: Notice how quickly words multiplied into catastrophe for Israel. The spies' fearful report led to lies, which led to complaining, then gossip, then rebellion, then threats of violence, and finally, the desire to return to slavery. Sin through speech compounds rapidly. One careless comment at dinner can poison a relationship for years. One piece of gossip can destroy a reputation. One exaggeration can divide a community. "When words are many, sin is unavoidable." This proverb calls us to restraint and intentionality. Before speaking, pause. Consider whether your words will build up or tear down, unite or divide, heal or wound. In our age of constant communication, wisdom often sounds like silence. Practice the discipline of speaking less but saying more.
